The TQ Server component is only installed explicitly when a network installation is taking place. In such situations, it is normal to have just one machine on which TQ Server is installed.
When the installation of TQ Server is done, the installation program should be run on the machine that is to have TQ Server installed. Do not attempt to run the installation program from a workstation unless you are using a remote desktop environment like terminal services or VNC).
The installation program will remind you of this requirement with the warning panel. These requirements are necessary as the installation program will attempt to install the TQ Server program as a service (in MS-Windows terminology) or a daemon (in Unix terminology).
TQ Server Details
Before the installation can proceed, additional information must be gathered. This is entered in the following panel:
IP Address and TCP/IP Port
The first piece of information required is the TCP/IP address and port that TQ Server should use when listening for connections from TQ Client and TQ Admin programs wanting to access the central TQ database. The install program will suggest the IP address of the first network card in the PC. That value can be modified if the IP address of another card should be used. The install program will also suggest a port number, but the user can enter any number in the range 1 to 32,767. However, it should be noted that port numbers below 1024 are generally reserved. In any case, the installation program will check that the port number is available after you click the "Next" button to move to the next installation panel. If the port number is unavailable, the installation program finds a free port number and presents it for selection and displays a message similar to the following:
Database to Use
The second piece of information is obtained through the Use an existing JDBC compliant DB check box. This determines whether the TQ Server uses its default database (the HSQL database supplied on the installation CD), or an existing JDBC compliant database already in use at your site. You may want to use your own database in order to simplify maintenance and backup procedures. To use a site's existing database does however require the availability of JDBC drivers for the database.
If you choose to use your own database, Typequick will add the tables it needs for its student information. You will be presented with two additional panels to enter details about the existing database so that the TQ Server can connect to and use the database. Refer to the topic Details for an Existing JDBC Compliant Database.
